Japan unveils a new futuristic wheelchair

Japanese researches yesterday introduced a prototype of a new type of electric wheelchair named Rodem, which promises greater mobility and easy usage. The design allows the patient to slide on and off easily, reducing burden on the caregiver when lifting.
The vehicle has four wheels and can be moved and turned using a joystick. Knees, elbows and chest rest on the cushions, while the head is slightly tilted forward for a comfortable ride. Rodem weighs 100 kg and can move at the speed of 6 km/h. On full charge, it can be operated up to 4 hours. The height of the seat can be adjusted and allows the patient to talk with people at eye level.
The inventors say they do not yet have plans for commercial sale because the wheelchair needs to first pass Japanese safety standards. At this time, they are open to offers from Japanese and foreign private companies. The price? According to the maker, the price won’t be too shocking and will be comparable to existing wheelchairs.
Yoichi Takamoto, the president of Tmsuk who created the wheelchair with the help of 10 other institutions, says that the vehicle is not intended only for the disabled but also people who just want an enjoyable ride on short distances.

Somehow, I think even Batman couldn’t resist it. What do you think? :D
