Salt-covered ojizosama statues in Japan

Snow in Japan or a surreal statue of Santa Claus? Neither of these! In one of the previous posts, you could read about Japanese ojizosama statues and their meaning. On the picture is one such statue covered in salt. These aren’t so common and I found it close to us near a temple in Nishiarai in Tokyo.

And why it’s covered in salt? People believe the salt will bring luck, clean the soul and make their wishes come true. When someone has a wish, they take some of the salt home. In return, next time they bring back new salt and pour it on the statue. If the wish comes true, they tend to bring back even bigger amounts of salt.
