Japanese band plays European polka music

Folk music band Edelweiss Kapelle from Tokyo.

Previously we’ve been listening to singing parrots, and now something equally fascinating.

In Japan, there is a band called Edelweiss Kapelle (エーデルワイスカペレ) that plays oberkrainer/polka music from Austria, Germany and Switzerland, as well as famous songs by the Avsenik brothers in Slovenian language.

Here they are singing in Slovenian in one of Tokyo’s German restaurants:

Edelweiss Kapelle are: Eiko “Maria” Kusanagi, Hiroyuki “Peter” Suzuki, Tadao Yamazaki, Katsumi Ishikawa and Yukari Era. The members got together in 1996 and had their first concert in Kloster Neustift near Brixen. They also play classical music and Austrian operettas.

Edelweiss Kapelle’s official website is here.

I’ve seen Edelweiss Kapelle videos before and was most amazed that Japanese would sing Slovenian music – and even more so – that they pronounce the lyrics so well. But I thought they were mostly performing in a Japanese restaurant somewhere in Germany – or at least that’s what the article said when I first learned about them.

Great post, enjoyed it very much!! :)
