About Daily Onigiri
Hello and welcome to Daily Onigiri. This is a relatively new, but fast-growing web site about Japanese lifestyle, culture, art, cuisine, entertainment and other Japan-related things that we hope will be interesting to people from many countries. You’ll even find free Japanese lessons for beginners here. We’re a bilingual blog with all articles published in both English and Slovenian (the founder of Daily Onigiri is Slovenian, so it makes sense!). The blog, launched in July 2009 and published in our free time, is currently run by only two people, a married couple residing in Tokyo, Japan.
The Core of the Onigiri
Rok is the founder of Daily Onigiri and the main writer. Born in Slovenia, a miniature superpower in central Europe. Before marrying Erika and ending up in Japan, he spent 9 years living in Hollywood, California, where he attended college and later worked as a graphic designer. He is interested in anything that has to do with art, photography, travel, environmental issues and ecology, computers and learning Japanese. Rok also paints celebrity caricatures and is the artist behind the graphics and most photographs on this site. His company, Aokumo, provides graphic design services and character concept design.
Erika, a native Japanese, is the voice behind Japanese lessons on this site and the source of invaluable help with ideas and information for articles. Born in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture. She a keen interest in cake-making and has graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Tokyo. She enjoys playing the piano, traveling, doing photography, making clay figurines, drawing, cooking delicious food and learning new words in Slovenian. What is this "onigiri" anyway?
Hah, good question! Onigiri is a Japanese rice ball that's usually formed into triangular or oval shape and often wrapped in seaweed. A typical onigiri contains 80 to 100 calories plus whatever filling is inside.
